Our History

Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Northern Indiana Real Estate stands on the heritage of half a century of real estate expertise along the Indiana and Michigan border. Formerly Prudential One Real Estate, the company has grown stronger with alliances between two states, five regions, 38 offices representing over 600 of the best real estate agents in the business. But more than our agents, more than our team of highly talented at-your-service staff, we are the local real estate professionals we have always been for Elkhart, South Bend, Mishawaka and Goshen.  We promote a professional consultative approach in real estate, assisting our buyers and sellers through every step of the real estate transaction.

Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Northern Indiana is part of the BHHS Michigan Real Estate Family of Companies, but it was originally founded in 1945 by the Dunfee family as Associated Realty in South Bend, Indiana.  Joe Dunfee helped define the foundations of the real estate industry in Indiana by establishing the licensing law  that created professional licensure of real estate agents in Indiana.  In 1967 he was joined by his sons, Bill and Joe Dunfee.

Continuing the legacy of real estate leadership, the family bought into the first real estate franchise in the country, the Gallery of Homes.  In the early 1970s, it was the first franchise system in the market.  Through strategic business decisions, the Dunfee family grew the company from 5 agents to 145 and 10 regional locations--securing their position as the number one real estate company in Northern Indiana.

The next major change came in 1989 when Joe Dunfee brought in the Prudential Real Estate franchise as Prudential Dunfee REALTORS.  They were one of the first Prudential brokerages in the country.  Surviving the highs and lows of real estate, Dunfee was able to negotiate a merger of three additional brokerages to create Prudential One Realty.  It was formed from West Culver Realty, two ERA brokerages, and a Michigan based brokerage.

In 2001, Joe Dunfee was introduced to Steve Fase, leading to the transition to the Prudential Preferred, REALTORS Family of Companies.  Their personal and business relationships continued to grow, and by 2012, Dunfee and Fase merged companies, and incorporated Prudential One Realty into Fase's Prudential Preferred, REALTORS group.

"It starts with trust," explained Dunfee. "Mutual business philosophies on how you treat your agents, staff and the public."  Working through those items, you discover that the decisions made by the other are more similar than they are different.  Fase's company became an obvious choice for Dunfee.

In 2014 all branches of the Prudential Preferred, REALTORS Family of Companies grew stronger with the national transition to Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices.  After decades of success with Prudential, transitioning to Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices was an opportunity to progress—binding the legacy, heritage and expertise in real estate of Prudential One Real Estate to the business dominance and financial prowess of Berkshire Hathaway.

Both Dunfee and Fase expect the Northern Indiana region to continue in growth.  "We've always been on the leading edge, first to build offices, first in education, first in relocation.  We're always the first out there,' explained Dunfee.  Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Northern Indiana Real Estate is proud to define real estate and continue the legacy of strength built on over half a century of real estate experience in Northern Indiana.
